SEEING WITH A SMART PHONE

NEWS YOU CAN USE POSTED IN LIFEGLOW

Jan - Feb 2011, Vol. 28, No. 1

A smart phone app called LookTel uses the phone’s camera to help blind users identify everyday objects.
For example, point the camera at a box in the cupboard and back comes the answer: “corn flakes.” Point the
camera at a green portrait of Alexander Hamilton on a small elaborately printed piece of paper and back comes the answer: “ten dollars.”
LookTel works by transmitting the photo image over the Internet to the LookTel photo archives. When there is a match, the answer is sent back to the phone. Obscure items may not achieve a match, but most everyday items do. LookTel works with a Windows Mobile phone. A similar app for the Google Android phone is called Goggles. An app is also available for the Apple iPhone.
