SIGHT SAVERS AMERICA

Here is a group who help children with vision loss. They are located in Pelham, Alabama. There is a clip from their site and contact information below.

Every child deserves the chance to read a story book, play a video game, hit a baseball, look into their mother's face. But, sadly, many children have serious vision conditions. These children may never know the simple joys which most of us take for granted.

Sight Savers can change the odds, offering help and hope. From screening to treatment, we won't stop until the world is in focus for all kids, one kid at a time.

Sight Savers offers a comprehensive and timely vision health program. Working with members of our extensive volunteer network of eye care providers who donate their services, Sight Savers is able to purchase necessary treatments from eye glasses to surgery to advanced technological equipment at little or no cost to eligible families. Additionally, bilingual (Spanish/ English) Case Specialists are available to assist those in need of translation and interpretation services. Sight Savers' personal case management eye care service has become the benchmark for the industry.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY

I have posted an article my father sent me about a boy in Oxford Mississippi who is legally blind like me. My parents and I went to Oxford every two years for my cataract surgeries.

Sight Savers brings world into focus

Program helps children see world around them

BY ALYSSA SCHNUGG

Andrew Jones sat in the waiting area outside Room 404 in the University of Mississippi Student Union. Like most 7-year-old boys, he was a little antsy to get on with the reason he and his family were at Ole Miss on Friday.

Andrew, who lives in Starkville, Mississippi was waiting to see Dr. Dawn DeCarlo, who would examine his eyes and his vision to determine if he was eligible for a $2,600 closed circuit television, or CCTV, that enlarges objects up to 75 times their normal size.

“I use one at school,” he said. “I use it to read words.”

If Andrew fits the criteria, he and his family will get the CCTV at no cost.

About 15 children from all over north Mississippi attended the Sight Savers America clinic this past Friday. A handful of them would go home with a CCTV. The others would take home other various
vision aids, including telescopes, handheld magnifiers and Braille equipment.

Bittersweet results

At the end of his examination, Andrew’s results were bittersweet. He was visually impaired enough — 20/200 with glasses — to take home one of the CCTVs.

“It’s a really neat machine,” said Andrew’s mother, Sharron. “It was worth the trip. It’s not just for books. He can see all kinds of things, like money and photographs. It’s going to help him tremendously.

Children at the clinic have conditions that cause them to be “legally blind” that can’t be completely
corrected through glasses. Some of the children suffered from optic atrophy, retinopathy of prematurity; nystagmus and other serious conditions. Andrew suffered seizures as a baby which caused his optic nerve to be underdeveloped.

TECH SUPPORT

To my horror after calling Dell for help with my computer the steps they suggested wired out everything on my computer. So I had to call the real "Tech Support" my sister. After cleaning the computer with Wipe Drive and reinstalling my disc and reloading a few things I was up and running. The next thing that happened FireFox was updated. Like a fool I clicked to download it. Big mistake to download it without writing down my old setting. The link below is the Add-on for making the fonts large print. I will post other helpful tints after I find them.

TRAINS AND TRACKS

Yesterday we went to see the NCAA basketball games. We had a wonderful time. I have traveled by bus and trolleys before but they can be tricky. We were going over to board the train after we parked the car. Let me just say now trains unnerved me. We had to walk over the track to board the train. We were getting off at our stop and the floor had a small slop which I forgot about so I flopped on the bottom step. Thank goodness I was still inside the train. Next week I'm going for mobility training with a cane. This is a much needed skill for me since there isn't always going to be someone buy my side. As I have said before, my family and friends have been wonderful watching out of me when we are out and about. A cane will help me get around on trips and at night. I don't do well stepping down steps since I my depth perception is off.

Hearing Associates went to Charlotte NC to support Sherri's Tennessee team in the national championship game. Too bad they lost to Michigan. Frances, Pat, Mark and Sherri.
