Gardening Tips
Are you planning to work in the garden this summer? Here are some tips that visually impaired gardeners have found helpful:
• Paint tools bright colors so they don’t blend in with soil or lawn.
• Keep track of hand tools and other items by wearing an apron with lots of pockets.
• To make certain small seeds get planted, pick up seeds with a dampened finger, rub off onto a piece of toilet paper for easy viewing, wad up the tissue, and plant it in the hole.
• Use gardening felt to minimize weeding.
• Place high-contrast borders around flower beds to avoid mowing them.
• Choose identifiable plants for garden landmarks. Geraniums and herbs can be identified by scent. Plants with large leaves or curious textures can be identified by touch.
